Sports rehabilitation is an area of specialization within Rehabilitation. Within our clinic this is provided through both Physical Therapy and Athletic Therapy. Sports therapists have a keen interest in the mechanics of sport and ensuring Athletes return to function as quickly as possible.
Both Athletic Therapists and Physical Therapists treat musculoskeletal injuries however the professions are distinct and are not considered the same.
The difference involves legislation. Physical Therapists are regulated healthcare providers and governed through the Saskatchewan College of Physical Therapists. Physical Therapists receive a Master's Degrees and specialize in musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory pathologies.
Athletic Therapists are non-regulated providers. They specialize in personal training and injury specific rehabilitation techniques. They receive a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology with a Certificate in Athletic Therapy. Athletic therapists are experts in acute care management and integrate care with strength and conditioning principles.
Both these professions require individual billing. Athletic Therapy is not considered the same service as Physical Therapy. If you are planning to utilize private health insurance, please ensure you have coverage specifically for Athletic Therapy prior to booking your appointment.
